Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portugal national team fought for the UEFA Nations League trophy on Sunday, defeating Spain after a series of penalties.
The veteran scored an equalizing goal in the second half, sending the teams into extra time. However, C. Ronaldo was substituted at the end of the second half, and it later became clear that the team captain had felt discomfort during warm-up but decided to play anyway.
As C. Ronaldo said after the match, he would sacrifice his health for the Portugal national team.
"I felt an injury during warm-up that has been bothering me for some time, but for Portugal, I would break my leg if that were needed.
I gave everything for this title," C. Ronaldo rejoiced after the victory.
The Portuguese also had kind words for Spain's star Lamine Yamal.
"Lamine will win many personal and team trophies. He is phenomenal.
He has a very long career ahead of him, during which he will win more than one Nations League trophy.
We need to understand that he is only 17 years old. I want to ask everyone to give him a little space and peace. He will need that very much," C. Ronaldo said.
